Spring Valley Golf Club

IN: COURSE DIRECTORY | REGION: Melbourne, VIC | USER RATING: (3.5) | Add A Review

The term "Hidden Jewel" was first used by renowned golf course critic, Tom Ramsay to describe the Spring Valley Golf Course.

Located in the heart of the Melbourne sandbelt, Spring Valley is a fine example of the work of Vern Morcom the son of Mick, the famous constructor who put all of Alister Mackenzie’s work on the ground in Melbourne.

For those who relish the topography at Royal Melbourne they will find Spring Valley to be a flatter course much like Kingston Heath which is just down the road. Morcom crafted some of his finest bunkers and greens here. Ben Crenshaw, himself, is an admirer of Morcom’s work at Spring Valley and made a special trip to see the course and to study his work. The holes demand well shaped shots from the tees and the irons to the flags must be played with precision.

Spring Valley is what would be referred to as a traditional course. That is something very much back in fashion and a characteristic to be admired.

i believe that the other reveiws dont justify how good spring valley is, from tee to green the course is in exelant condition and plays as good as any other sandbelt course. The course offers challange to golfers of all handicaps and offers non members the oppertunity to experiance a private golf club. i would say that spring valley is an up and coming course that will impress all

I rate this course very highly. if you ever get the chance to play it get on. Excellent fairways & tee boxs, true greens. The best club house in the sand belt. Its only fault it can be a little smelly in the summer when it blows north.

All credit to the groundstaff as this is a nicely manicured course. Fairways are a bit firmer than most but very lush. Bunkers are well maintained and the greens are in top condition.

However to the bad points. The smell from the neighbouring landfill site is quite bad from hole 3-7, it does detract from the experience. Also the layout is not challenging. With a good tee shot, you can clear most fairway bunkers.

So when you consider the price and the other courses available, you can find better value for money if you like a challenge.

$80 a round? Are you kidding me?

We had a very pleasant game round The Valley, but nothing more. It is no real test of golf, myself a 12 handicapper having a very average day, but shooting 83….if you hit the ball consistently further than 230-250m off the tee you could easily break par here. It is a traditional layout, but not in the league of Royal Melbourne and Kingston Health. In fact, mentioning them in the same sentence is an in justice to those two Masterpieces!!!

Having played some of the courses on the fringe of the city, from 13th beach to anything on Mornington Penn…The Valley has nothing…let me repeat that….nothing on any of those courses.

Even if you get the iseekgolf discount, it is difficult to justify spending over $60 on green fees alone, when you can get a cart and green fee for the same at Waterford Valley.

In review…an overall nice relaxed round of golf, but not worth the cash.

PROS

  • Good Greens
  • Top quality greenside bunkering
  • Too short

Cons

  • The Smell
  • Bunkers not in play enough off the tee
  • WAY TOO EXPENSIVE
