If you have reached your twilight years or for any other reason you struggle to drive beyond 150 metres, then this course will pose a good challenge. At less than 5200 metres from the BACK TEES this course is very short and no amount of design effort can hide this shortcoming. Of course it has some good short holes – it would have to! Do yourself a favour and play on either of the two courses just before Katoomba.

This Golf course is a challenge to all golfers. The tight fairways mean club selection is critical. The course is not long but the greens are sometimes difficult to read.The redesign of the course to make way for a residential development have given the opportunity to install water hazards thus giving a resort style feel to the layout. New cart paths and water towers add to the upgrade. This course is a pleasure to play after a couple of rounds as you learn where not to hit the ball.

I have played all the golf courses in the Blue Mountains in recent months and was gobsmacked by all the improvements to Katoomba.

The Greenkeeper has done an excellent job, especially during the drought conditions, to present the course in a manicured state.

Although not a long course (5070 m) the golfer must be selective when teeing up especially on the 3rd, 4th and 13th holes where placing your ball off the tee is important. The new cart paths and fresh water towers made the course feel and look like a resort course without the sting of high green fees.

From what I gather this course is still in the process of being upgraded. The first 9 holes showed signs of fairly recent and largely complete work, but the "back" 9 only had some fairly recent additional trees.

I'm not a very good golfer, but the upgrades are tough. In an attempt to make up for some lack of length, the curator has made sure ball placement needs to be good.

The result is a lot of lost balls.

Another nasty thing is the "Grass Traps" surrrounding greens on the older parts of the course. Obviosly these were once bunkers, but now have 10 inch long matted kyk in them. You can't even find your ball in them, let alone try to hit out of them.

Also the course layout is a bit over the place. I gather this is due to the renovations and it's not the final layout. Thats why there is no real back nine. We were given a map, but it wasn't very good. It indicated that we needed to lay-up on a couple of holes, but when we got there we could have driven hard off the tee.

This all reads pretty negative, but it's actually not a bad course. The newer fairways are really quite good and the greens likewise.

So overall not the best day of golf for me, but I will go back, because I can see the potential of the course and the good bits are quite good.

In the mean time it should reward any player better then me and that's most players.

As with all new developments, it generally comes at a price and sadly the course is paying the cost.

The new "Escarpement " development will be great for the club in the future but for now some aspects of the course need attention. To be fair, the drought conditions are also not helping, with only green and tee watering occurring and with some rain the course will green-up greatly.

The 1st hole is a great little opening par 4 played from an elevated tee and reachable in one if you take the 'right' line.

The 2nd and 3rd holes have paid the price of the new development with the greens suffering the worst.

The remaining holes are as per the original layout except for the par 3 9th and 10th holes which have been put in place due to the loss of the old 10th.

The par 4 15th is a great hole again played from an elevated tee with a drive over tall gums required to position yourself in the left turning fairway.

The tall and wide trees that guard most fairways are the biggest hurdle to overcome on this course. Any stray tee shot will generally require a pitch back to the fairway.

The greens are in good condition but a little slower than normal obviously due to the dry weather.

All in all Katoomba is worth the walk but it will be a lot better when the new work is completed.
